Performance Brake Pads – 7 Key Characteristics

Performance Brake Pads – 7 Key Characteristics

When replacing your brake pads, you may choose performance brake pads depending on the design intent of your vehicle. Brake pads very widely in quality, with different temperature ranges, wear characteristics, and frictional coefficients. Which brakes pads are best? Depends on your application. Brake pads used for road cars can be quite different from race cars, requiring more cold bite and less top end performance.

  1. Why does it say ceramic isn’t used anymore? Almost all I see is ceramic pads when I look up brake pads!

  2. which pads for street driving, and autocross. I wish I could find a good pad for street , high spirited driving, and autocross that doesn’t cost 150-300 per a axle. people tell me to get the hawk hp+ they just aren’t in my budget right now.

  3. Forgive my lack of knowledge, that’s why I’m here, but at what point does one need to start upgrading master cylinders to accommodate the stronger than stock brakes?

  4. I have a Porsche Cayman S 2006 3.4 naturally aspirated with red calipers that say Porsche on them, Does anyone know what type of pads these originally come with ? I don’t have the vin numbers, guesses maybe semi metallic or ceramics ? Thanks

  5. I started watching your videos long time back but now i got to see this video when i am searching material for my masters dissertation this is very helpful 🙂 thanks and can you tell from where i can find more papers and research material for my dissertation in automobile mostly on materials?

  6. I love your videos, however I was hoping this one would include information about how the different pad compounds effect the amount of noise, dust and rotor wear you will experience. Any follow up on this?

  7. There was no mention of Judder or Thudder during the discussion of performance brake pads.  Asbestos is still used in brake pads.  The characteristics of friction vs. velocity is completely missing in this presentation.  No mention was made about bedding and material transfer for adhesive friction, the predominant mode for friction in braking.

  8. which is the best brake pad for mercedes ml 350 which company and model ? your suggestion will be my decision so thank you very much for your help

  9. Funny people never talk about changing break fluid. An inexpensive thing to do, it makes great improvement ….no one believes me.

  10. I always thought the changer on the edges was used as another more visible “wear indicator” as in if the pad wears away the chamfered edge the pads are close to being worn out. I know they use a metal strip that drags along the rotor and when that happens the pad is gone and needs to be replaced.

True story but way older vehicle. The pads were worn down enough where the rivers used to connect the pad to the backing plate wore down and was digging in the rotor.

  11. The best, most concise, and informative video explanation I have seen or heard of for pads thus far !

  12. Umm okay so we now have styrofoam brake pads in full ro roI MKE WI only Mexican Americans tryna get us from Jason of the spoons….

  13. I had huge Brembo brakes and rotors with ceramic pads and they failed immediately on the track.

I had to pit and have my pit crew put in my Cobalt Friction racing pads. Back on the track and the racing pads are impossible to overheat and fade.
Castrol Srf $80 a pint full synthetic brake fluid is a must!

  14. i was thinking switching from solid to slotted but i dont know which pads should i use. i have 2004 bmw 4.8is 360 bhp and i use it 95% for commute but that 5% i like to run it 250kmh on german auto ban,. i have noticed i am loosing brakes when driving a bit more aggressive above 200kmh. so racing pads are not good for commute, and regular ones are not good for autobahn… any ideas what should i look for? if i use ceramic pads on regular disc, is there any other issue than premature disc wear?

  15. I’d like to see the difference between OEM pads VS Semi-metalic pads VS Ceramic pads. For street use.

  16. I deliver pizza and I buy the most expensive pads for my Ford Rangers that Oriellys sells for about $90 a set.

  17. Hi! my 2018 BMW M4 with 25k miles currently got front brake pads at 5mm thickness (NOT carbon ceramic). With the car, brake servicing warranty was purchased that will expire in 15 days. BMW doesn’t service unless thickness goes to atleast to 4mm. No chance of getting the car to track/autocross, any other specific driving style may use 1mm thickness with 50-100miles driving? 🙂 Thanks!

  18. Ceramic brake pads dont lock tires up under hard braking. For performance semi metallic is far better. My infiniti has gg rated ceramic brake pads and I cant engage ABS on dry pavement. My other car (mercedes) has ff rated semi metallic and it brakes far better than infiniti and i am able to engage ABS. These coefficient letters can be comparable under same material like ceramic vs ceramic or semi metallic vs semi metallic

  19. Thanks so much for your videos. Would a lip along the edge of my rotors cause brakes to produce intermittent chirping sound while driving? Thanks for your time and patience.

  20. hi i want to make some changes in brake pad materials for my project which materials are prefer for me

  21. Great video.. I’m in the market to replace my rotors, pads and calipers on my 2000 4Runner.. every 2-3 years my rotors get warped cuz if the heat and I have to have them fixed or replaced. Any brand recommendations for rotors pads and calipers since I’m planing on changing all 3… ??? Thanks

  22. Cutting off the edge of pads has nothing to do with brake noise. They do that to save a little money on every set of pads.
