What Type Of Muffler Should You Go With When Upgrading Your Exhaust?

This PowerNation Extra gives you a look at the different kinds of aftermarket mufflers available when you want to upgrade your exhaust system. Marc from Detroit Muscle lays out the three main types: glasspack, chamber, and turbo. The glasspack is the original high performance muffler. However, chamber and turbo aren’t bad options either depending on what you’re going for.

  1. If i dont care about at sound at all.. and i just wanted the largest performance increase (increase in horsepower) i could get. I dont care if its loud or quiet, what is the best type of muffler to get for a hemi charger ?

  2. Yep…had glass packs on my 72 Chevelle. My Dad said..I can hear you coming home from work miles away, back in the day.
    How true…LOL

  3. HAs the channel ever did a dual exhaust versus single challenge/test?
i just got a 84 cutlass with horrible sounding dual 2" exhaust with red glasspack bottles and wondering if it would sound better as in more rumbly with one single 3" which will also flow better since one 3" pipe is about 7 sq cm versus 2 x2" =6.28 sq cm?
or can that smaller 2" dual setup scavenge better and keep low end TQ versus a big single which may gain high rpm hp but sacrifice about the same amt of low/mid range TQ

to make the question even harder, im currently running the stock 305 SBC but already bought a used 2003 5.3L LS which will double the stock 305hp [nevermind all the ponies that escaped that 305 barn in last 37 yrs, lol. ]
SO i dont wanna spend any more than neccessary on this dual system if im gonna upgrade to a bigger dual or bigger single exhaust for the LS motor in near future

  4. Guys. Do you ever heard about auto transmission need to use s flow exhaust rather then straight flow because auto transmission need more back pressure?

  5. Stay away from chambered mufflers if you like to be able to hear yourself think or carry a conversation.

  6. Camshaft overlap compression ECT will determine how much quote-unquote loop there is…. If you’ve got something that makes power and you’re concerned with performance you better be able to see through the muffler.. no choke them down chamber BS!

  7. What muffler can I put on my 4.3l V6 that Doesn’t make it sound like boat motor at 3k+ rpms?

  8. Are the magnaflow and flowfx considered glasspacks? They have that same style but use steel whool i think for muffling.

  9. i have a 2018 ford transit connect( I know…) what system would you guys recomend? We will put a turbo on the existing engine also and rebuild the engine what should i buy?>

  10. Magnaflows are the only way to go. Flowmasters are more Restrictive than most Factory Mufflers

  11. Back in the 70’s growing up in Pittsburgh, my father had a 1969 Buick Electra 225. He had put dual exhaust on it with a pair of 57 T-Bird resonator’s for mufflers. Man It sounded sweet.
I moved away to Maryland in 1976 and while I was gone he had put a pair of Cherry Bombs on it. OMG you want to talk about Loud !!! That big ole 430 in it really came to life but was obnoxiously loud. Even with the windows up.
But by 1978 the salt from on the roads in the winter time took a toll on the frame and it rotted out back at the rear of the rear wheel arch and he had to junk it. There was no such thing as fixing a frame back then.

  12. I have an 2005 Silverado. I Want a deep throaty so d but not a loud mouth of a muffler. What would be ideal?

  13. I just don’t like the hollow-metal-can sound of the chambered "Flowmaster style" mufflers. Plus, they don’t flow as well as a straight-through muffler. Glasspack for the win!

  14. I know my vehicle isn’t exactly the normal for you guys, but I have a 1992 Nissan D21 truck. It’s a 4 banger with a 5 speed. I have a Pace Setter header that came with it. Could you please recommend a muffler for it please? I’m very lost when it comes to this.

  15. Which muffler and tail pipe would be the most suitable to get a deeper sound on a Golf 7 1.6 TDI? Are there any possibilities?

  16. >Having to replace packing
    >Having drone and rasp

I like chambered. If I really needed quiet, I’d use a U-turn "turbo" style or multiple chambered mufflers, or a multi-chamber muffler. Loud mode? Cherry Bomb M80.

  17. Dynomax Race Bullets and never look back. That or Spintech are my favorite sounding mufflers
