Is Upgrading Your Engine Mounts Even Worth It?
Do aftermarket engine mounts even do anything? Who knows? Today on Money Pit, Zach installs a fancy set of polyurethane engine mounts on the miata as he explores the pros and cons of different types of engine mounts.

Often YouTube producers know their subject.
But they don’t know videography.
Sound, camera, lighting, scripting …
This one is all good.
Throws tq wrench
Fuckin thing
Sooo.. it is normal to have more vibration on steering, pedal and butt after change to harder engine mount ?
Just changed mine, and was wondering if I installed them correctly or not.
I went to stiffer motor mounts on my car and because of all the vibration, my a/c bracket also connected to the motor mount snapped. Bye bye a/c and hello heat😢. Poor design by dodge.
Pays 50 dollars for a set of motor mounts cus civics are cheap
It’s a common part that breaks on 4x4s. It’s easy to change on trucks because there is so much room.
I needed to change them on my sister’s old car because she drives too fast over speed bumps.
for a FWD car with around 300HP, swapping engine mounts literally shaved a whole second off my 0-60 time, the stock mounts where giving me so much wheel hop, best mod I’ve done to my car hands down
I did a rebuild on my car and replaced mine let’s just say the old ones were not existent
What about the loss of torque on the extentions?
My subraus engine mounts and a tranny mount all in one Polly bushings and everything was only 60$
The torque wrench should loose some torque with every inch of extension. Hopefully Zach knows that and hopefully anyone who doesn’t know that will read this comment and then google this information to make sure I’m not full of caca!
how many ftlbs did you lose with all those extensions… Ugh smart idea, not smart execution.
this would have taken me over a year and a bunch of holes in the wall for sure…
Zach do your own channel dude.
Poly squeaks tho, too…
I think it’s important to mention, on Aluminum engines, you almost always wanna use Rubber mounts. The Aluminum is naturally softer than Steel/Iron engines and with a lot of vibration, they can greatly increase the risk of throwing rods and damaging other moving parts inside the engine. You don’t have to worry about this for non-Aluminum engines.
If you have an Aluminum engine, it’d be a great idea to replace or check your mounts ever 75k-100k miles. I know for my vehicle specifically, the engines most commonly blow around 150k+ miles, even with "good and on-time maintenance". The biggest problem I see with these owner’s complaints about the engine dying, is that they never ever mention changing out their motor/trans mounts. It’s important for Aluminum engines and it’s unfortunate that it isn’t more widely known.
I changed the mounts on my corolla to polyurethane mounts and within a week my steering column was loose
So he did have to remove the intake 😂
9:22 Hand cam!
Why don’t manufacturers just install better mounts when they build the car?
Would save a lot of time and money.
Great video! Love your cardboard picture tip
Your mounts actually look pretty solid Joby
230???? I paid 50 for my 94 Toyota pickup lol
I love engine mounts just hate the fact they cost 300 each if you don’t have the skill to replace them
anyone else see the porsche at 12:36?
😂ZACK THE PIT SNAKE 😂😂😅
Ah yes the precision 40lbft torque of the engine mounts but just dugaduga the lugnuts. While neither failing are good, I think i would rather one of my engine mounts loosen rather than wheels 🙂 Also I’ve already lost a set of lugs to the impact wrench geniuses at Ford, now I do it myself.
Doughnut.
Why would you not do the transmission mount at the same time that’s part of it the drive train being mounted to the car. You should’ve done a transmission mount.
I like my stock engines mount. Comfortable and soak up the vibrations
Zach is so easy on the eyes. It makes learning about cars much easier 😅
Wen zack presses the drill with the swivelling drill bit on it fitted with an attachment to the tip that swivells??!! 😮😮
Wot was u THINKING?! U shuda known the force at speed wud send that thing flying n in general zack is not stupid.
Got away this time boys but b careful next time or jus get an adult to help 😂😅
I definitely don’t want to vibrate or hear the engine.

I upgraded the engine mounts on a Peugeot 307 Feline 180, a car which could have been a decent performance hatchback when standard if Peugeot hadn’t made its suspension from treacle pudding.
The poly engine mounts made more difference than most people will probably get in other cars, as it removed the "I shall do zees lateur" delay in taking off from a standing start by preventing energy being wasted in movement of the engine block. The car just took straight off and it caught me out the first time (the 307 Feline is deceptively quick and doesn’t feel nearly as fast as it is).
Cars that are more solidly built probably won’t notice this much difference but it paid for itself every day and didn’t introduce any NVH at all.
Be careful when going poly suspension bushes, those are also 100% worth it but are not invincible and can be inconvenient to replace when one of them breaks.
You guys inspired me to own a miata, my plan is to get the new mx 5 (2023) and maybe get it used? or brand new? I still don’t know. Well I have a long way to go anyway, I’m only 16 and where I live, I can’t even drive yet! Man I cannot wait to own a mx 5.
"This is the way you’re supposed to do it, but that sucks, so we’re gonna do it a different way and pray for the best" is the most real project car shit ever.
You can buy liquid polyurethane that cures and hardens, it’s what hockey pucks are made of. Back in the days of forums that was our diy solution 🤘😎🤘
Do poly give vibration to steering wheel?
Ever done a project with a 2009 Nissan Altima? I am experiencing a problem with the same mounts you just did on that Miata but it started out to be a problem with strut mounts. Found out the Strut Mounts were ok but the Motor Mounts on my Altima were causing the engine to lift several inches up on the right side. If not replaced will there be a serious problem?
You forgot to add threadlocker to the bolts and nut.
You need to torque after everything is aligned properly. And the weight of the engine fully seated on the mounts
About 230.. for most platforms……
That must have been Pre-pandemic prices because performance mounts for mine are $600.
No oil catch can on this bad boy?
Yes. Engine mounts deteriorate over time. They soften and, eventually, may fail to perform as designed. But, they are an integral component of your car’s drivetrain performance, comfort & handling. Some vehicles never require addressing the engine mounts. Some do.
@11:43 , Something on the trunk of the car appears to fall of
I know this is late by 3 years but this really helped me when I was picking my engine mounts for my street/strip 383 stroker.
With the poor condition of the motor mounts (torn off) , the transmission mount also needs to be changed. If they sell a complete poly bushings kit, replacement of those bushings should tighten up the suspension even more.
I just changed Engine mounts on my e39 (with rubber ones) and the car feels like its brand new for some reason 😃
For anyone looking to add these aftermarket engine mounts , don’t . Your engine mounts are designed only for the harmonic balancer in your engine , changing the stiffness if your engine mounts , will care this part to brake and not work properly. MOST IMPORTANTLY… safety . There will be so much vibrations that it will literally losses every single bolt in your chassis and access, thus causing electrical problems , bad connections, bad ground.
Just wondering, I’m looking at getting an updated rear motor mount for my Ford focus. Do I need to change out the right and left one as well?
